History of Women's Rec. Hockey in Kamloops

Saturday, January 14, 1978
-1st Game Kamloops vs Ashcroft (Dream Come True)
-Kamloops loses 5-3 in Ashcroft
-Borrowed Jerseys from Parkwood Realty
-Picture and article in newspaper
-Phone rings off the wall with interested players


One month later
-Mr. Mike’s sponsors a team
-Allen Young coaches for 2 years(coaches (his brother, Brian, now coaches the Vibe”a single A team who won 2 A Provincials
-No available icetime to develop women’s hockey. K-J goes to City council and secures 2 Sun. afternoon spots @ VV arena
-George Smith coaches for 5 years


September 1978
-Interior League is organized with 2 teams from Kamloops
one from Logan Lake and one from Ashcroft
-Sponsorships come in from the Leland Hotel, David Thompson Hotel, Village Hotel, Brass Kettle and Labatt’s Blue


September 1979
-Kamloops teams divide into Recreational: Mr.Mike’s Marauders & Competitive: D.T. Blues (Lumby joins competively)
-DT Blues also play PeeWee rep and Bantam boys


March 5-8, 1981
-Female Ice Hockey is established as an official sport in the BC Winter
games in Prince George. K-J sent over 100 letters on behalf of the BC
Girls Ice Hockey Ass’n to make this happen (another dream come true)
-Over the years Kamloops Rangers (the former DT Blues who evolved
into the Village Jets) wins 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze @ BC Games
-Brian McMillan coaches

1990-94 Kamloops Rangers -“AA” Provincial Champions
1990 “ “ -Gold Medal Western Canadian Champions
1991-94 -Silver Medal Western Canadian Champions
1997-98 -“AA” Provincial Champions
1998-99-Bronze Medal Western Canadian Champions
-Rangers coaches: Peter Doyle, Geoff Eggleton, Cathy Wolffe, Rob Hesketh, and Gerald Etienne (various times through the years).

-Icebox Women’s Recreational Tournament – 8 teams

-Recreation League at Icebox with 4 teams
-Icetime @ VV arena is used for Drifters team which focuses on developmental hockey skills

-Five teams in the league plus Merritt, Salmon Arm, Princeton, Chase, Vernon, Kelowna & Ashcroft play exhibition games with Kamloops’ teams

-Annual Icebox Women’s Tournament – 14 teams


March 11-13, 2005
-First Ever Pacific Northwest Women’s Masters Hockey Tournament in Kamloops (Another Dream)
-Goals of tournament are to increase awareness that women can and still play hockey, to have a reunion with past and present players, and to spark an interest in the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton, where female hockey is one of 27 sports!


July 22-31, 2005
-Three teams (Eagles, the Misfits & Kamloops Collision Coyotes) represent Kamloops at the World Masters Games. The Misfits win gold in the “C” 30+ division and the Coyotes win Bronze in the “B” 35+ division


March 2 – 4, 2006
Twenty-four teams in the Kamloops Women’s Masters Tournament.

September 2005
Seven teams in the Kamloosp Women's Recreation Hockey league at the Ice Box aren. The players organize league duties because of managment changes at the arena.

Twenty-eight teams in the 3rd annual Kamloops Brewery Women’s Masters Hockey Tournament (10 teams on a waiting list). Kamloops Brewery comes on board as a title sponsor.


April 15/07
Vickie Taylor goes to Sweden to compete against European teams. We start marketing for our 2008 tournament.

Icebreaker Tournament with 8 Women’s teams & 16 Men’s teams

Nine teams in the Kamloops Women’s Recreational Hockey League (KWRHL): Kamloops Collision Coyotes, VV Overlander Lions, Boston’s Eagles, VIP Transport Hawks, Lightning, Stars, Jets, Bridgeport Bruins, and Sundance Electric.
